    Developmental Skills This Game Promotes

While your little ones are having fun matching colors, they’re also developing several important skills:

Color recognition and identification – Learning to identify and name colors like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, gray, black, and brown

Memory and recall – Especially when playing the traditional matching game with pieces turned over

Fine motor skills – Through picking up, turning, and placing the shamrock pieces

Language development – Opportunity to discuss colors and the concept of matching

Sorting and categorizing – Essential early math skills

Following directions – Learning to understand and follow game rules

Turn-taking – When playing with others

I was amazed watching my two-year-old figure this game out so quickly! I initially thought some of the matching might be too tricky, but he surprised me—pointing out colors as he went. It’s a great reminder that every child develops at their own pace, and hands-on learning gives them the chance to shine in their own way.

Another little one had me laughing when I realized he was “cheating” at the memory game—he could see the colors through the paper because I used regular printer paper instead of cardstock! Lesson learned: laminate the pieces for durability (and to avoid sneaky little geniuses finding shortcuts!).

    How to Prepare the Game

    1. Download and print the shamrock color matching sheets
    2. Print three copies: one to keep whole as a color mat, and two to cut apart
    3. Use cardstock for durability
    4. Laminate all pieces for longer-lasting play (highly recommended!)
    5. Cut out the individual shamrocks from two of the sheets

    Ways to Play

    For Younger Toddlers (24-36 months)

Basic Color Matching: Start with just 3-4 colors. Place the whole sheet in front of your child and help them match the individual shamrocks to the same color on the sheet.

Color Sorting: Mix up several colors of shamrocks and have your child sort them by color.

Color Identification: Hold up a shamrock and ask your child to name the color. If they’re not yet naming colors, you can name it for them: “Look, this is a RED shamrock!”

Color Hunt: Hide shamrocks around the room and have your child find all the shamrocks of a specific color.

    For Kindergarten-Age Children (5-6 years)

Sensory Bin Exploration: Hide the shamrocks in a bin filled with green rice, dried split peas, or other sensory materials for a St. Patrick’s Day themed sensory experience.

Rainbow Order: Challenge older children to arrange the shamrocks in rainbow order.

Color Scavenger Hunt: After playing with the shamrocks, send children on a hunt around the house to find objects that match each color.

Pattern Making: Use the shamrocks to create and continue patterns (red, blue, red, blue, etc.).

      • Use consistent color vocabulary during play: “You found the PURPLE shamrock!”
      • Ask open-ended questions: “Which color shamrock do you want to find next?”
