Snack Idea Inspired by One Fish Two Fish:

Hopefully you’re not a ‘don’t play with your food’ person, because with this snack that is exactly what we are going to do.

This snack is so easy and SO FUN!

What Do You Need:

  • Pretzel Rod (those giant ones, not the little sticks)
  • Goldfish Crackers
  • Peanut Butter

What Do You Do:

On a plate put one pretzel rod, a glob of peanut butter, and a handful of goldfish.

Have your child first stick the pretzel rod in the peanut butter, then stick the gooey end of the pretzel rod into the pile of goldfish.

Does one stick on the end?

Keep fishing for a fun, entertaining snack!

More Ideas:

Mix a serving size of vanilla yogurt with a couple drops of blue food coloring and sprinkle some goldfish on top.

Put peanut butter or blue frosting on a graham cracker and add some goldfish on top or cut little fish out of strawberries or bananas.

Add a fruit or vegetable and milk for CACFP providers.

One Fish Two Fish Craft Ideas:

Make sure you grab all the printables for the activities and either follow along with the way we use them or use your imagination!! There is no right way to do art as long as you’re having fun!!

Dr. Seuss one fish two fish do a dot activity

One fish Two fish do a dot (printable)

Materials:

  • Template
  • Do A Dot Markers (Red and Blue)
    • You can also use:
      • Markers
      • Crayons
      • Paint
      • Pompoms
      • Playdoh balls

Directions:

This project will vary depending on the age/abilities of your little. After you explain the objective, let them at it.

If you want to cut the template in half to ensure one is red and one is blue, that is an option.

  1. Read the words on the page ‘red fish’ and ‘blue fish’ explain that you will be coloring one red and the other blue
  2. Show your child the circles on the fish and explain ‘dot dot dot’ on each of the circles

**Remember that some kids will dot the circles, some will use the do a dot markers like a traditional marker and color across the whole page and some kids will not separate the colors

**Keep in mind your objective as well. As a caregiver/educator what are you trying to get out of this project. Color recognition? Following directions? Just trying out new materials?

Paper plate fish

Materials:

  • Paper Plate
  • Large popsicle stick
  • Google eye or Marker to draw eye
  • Red and Blue Paint
  • Painting utensil like sponge brush, paint brush etc (fingers are also fun)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. Have your child paint one plate red and one plate blue
    • To make this one step for little toddlers-put paint directly on the plate you are having them color and show them how to smear the paint around
    • For an added step, add a little paint to another small paper plate for them to transfer to color their fish plate
  2. Have your child use the matching color to paint your popsicle stick, one red and one blue
  3. Once dry, cut out a triangle for the fish tail fin and glue to the opposite side. You now have a tail fin and a mouth
  4. Glue the matching popsicle stick to the back of your fish
  5. Add a google eye or draw an eye on your fish
  6. Enjoy your red and blue fish puppet and use while you read the book

Hand or Feet painting (printable) or use a large sheet of paper

This project isn’t so much for the kids as it is for the parents as you are doing the work, but over my years as a childcare provider, I know these types of projects mean so much to parents. The kids always find it silly and ticklish to get painted.

You can do this project with either hands or feet, many really young children/infants tend to fist their hands when they get painted so the feet option is generally best for them.

Materials:

  • Use the template (2 pages) or a large sheet of paper
    • I recommend printing on cardstock but regular printer paper will work just fine
  • Paint – yellow, green, red, and blue.
  • Paint Brush or paper towel for painting hands/feet
  • Black Marker
  • Clean up station
    • Wet wash clothes
    • Wet wipes
    • Sink
    • etc

Directions:

  1. Put one color on 4 different plates
  2. Decide how you will paint hands/feet
    • Paint brush
    • Paper towel (my preferred way)
    • Dipping directly into the paint
  3. Paint hands/feet for each color
    • We use 1 fish – yellow 2 fish – green
  4. Clean up as you go
  5. Once dry, add details with your black marker
    • Add eyes, mouth, fin details, bubbles
    • If using a large sheet of paper write one fish two fish red fish blue fish by the correct hand/feet

One Fish Two Fish Counting Activity:

Dr. Seuss Counting Activity

While this project may be for your older toddlers, don’t leave out the littles!! Anyone who can safely eat goldfish crackers can join your activity. Repetition is very important so each time you try this activity or something similar they may pick up a little more.

  • Print out template
  • Laminate if you’d like to keep and reuse
  • Give your child a handful of goldfish crackers
    • Make sure you give extra…some will be eaten

Ways to play

  1. Have your child place one goldfish cracker on each fish in the bowls
  2. Have your child count as they place a goldfish cracker on each fish in the bowls
  3. Color some of the fish and use colored goldfish crackers to match
  4. Use fun utensils (like a spoon) to place goldfish crackers on the paper
  5. After all the crackers have been eaten (it’ll happen) use the template as a coloring sheet
