Ocean Tracing Printable Pack: Sharks, Fish, and Fine Motor Fun!

Save This

Do your little learners love all things shark and ocean animals? 🦈 If so, this ocean tracing printable pack is the perfect addition to your ocean theme. Imagine the excitement on their faces as they trace each pointy tooth, giggling at the idea of helping their friendly shark chomp-chomp-chomp its lunch.

Here’s a funny fact: sharks have been my absolute favorite animal for as long as I can remember…even though they totally freak me out. Maybe it’s because I live nowhere near an ocean, the closest body of water to me is a river about five blocks away. Sharks are safely distant, so I can love them from afar.

We had a blast testing these out. My two-year-old is in his “circles for days” era right now. Straight lines? Not so much. But circles? He’s unstoppable. He especially loved circling the fish air bubbles. My five-year-old, on the other hand, was all about the shark teeth tracing page (which you can snag for free below).

Anything that combines sharks + learning is an instant win in my book.

My Kids’ Experience

So, artistic choices were…interesting. My five-year-old went all out on his shark. Metallic crayons, extra lines, shapes – you name it, he drew it. Normally, getting him to craft these days is like pulling teeth (shark pun intended). But today? He was proud. “This shark is so cool!” he told me, admiring his masterpiece that honestly looked a bit like the shark bookmark he made last week – bold, bright, and completely his own.

And you know what? If I can get him to craft with me and think it’s cool, that’s a big ol’ win in my book.

Don’t Forget Younger Toddlers

If you have younger toddlers or pre-writers (think early twos or young threes) who aren’t quite ready for full tracing pages yet, check out the Ocean Pre-Writing Practice Pack. It’s designed with simpler lines and bigger movements to help build foundational skills before moving on to the main tracing pack.

This one was definitely a hit in my house. My five-year-old spent ages designing this line shape shark body, and honestly, I loved sitting down with my boys to color these together.

So often I’m prepping for childcare or keeping five other kids busy, but moments like these, just me and my boys (and sometimes my big, big boy, who’s 15, will join too) are what fill my cup.

Ways to Use This Shark Teeth Tracing Printable

Here are some jaw-some ways to use this printable in your classroom or childcare:

  • Trace and Color: Have children trace each tooth with a marker or crayon, then color the shark however they like. Glitter blue shark? Yes, please.
  • Cut and Paste Teeth: Cut out triangles from construction paper and have children place them over each dashed tooth. Children can then glue it in place, doubling up on fine motor skills.
  • Make It a Game: Cut out a set of triangle teeth from construction paper and hide them around the room for a “Feed the Shark” scavenger hunt. Each time a child finds a tooth, they glue it in the shark’s mouth.
  • Pattern Practice: Color the teeth in patterns (white, blue, white, blue) to sneak in early math skills.
  • Small Group Challenge: Set a timer and see if your group can trace all the teeth before the shark gets hangry. (Don’t worry, this shark only eats triangles.)

Why Is Tracing So Important?

You might be thinking, “It’s just tracing, right?” But here’s the secret: tracing is one of the BEST ways to build the foundation for writing success.

When kids ages 2-5 trace lines, shapes, and fun designs like shark teeth and fish bubbles, they’re actually:

✅ Strengthening their fine motor muscles (those tiny hand and finger muscles needed for holding pencils, cutting, buttoning coats, and eventually writing their names)
✅ Building hand-eye coordination, learning to control where their pencil or crayon goes on the page
✅ Developing visual tracking skills, which help with reading later on
✅ Practicing focus and attention to detail, even if their lines wobble all over the page (wobbly lines = working hard!)

Why Teaching Tracing Matters for Adults

For us as caregivers, parents, and teachers, tracing activities give us a simple, no-prep way to support early writing skills in a playful way.

Instead of starting with letters before kids are ready, we’re meeting them where they are, helping them build confidence, coordination, and that “I can do it!” feeling that makes writing feel less scary later on.

Plus, when you combine tracing with fun themes like ocean animals, kids don’t even realize they’re working. They just think they’re coloring shark teeth or helping a dolphin jump waves, and honestly, isn’t that the kind of learning we all want to create?
