How To Make 2-Ingredient Playdough Butter Slime

We love getting to mix stuff together and experiment with new things. From Oobleck to potion stations, kids love it all. When we decided to try out this playdough butter slime, my preschool age group jumped at the opportunity. With needing just two ingredients, this was not only super simple to make, but very low prep and something you probably have on hand.

What Is Playdough Butter Slime

Yeah, it’s a strange name. Does it make you a little concerned about what’s in it?

Don’t worry! There is no butter in this mixture.

When my group of kiddos were making this, these were the descriptive words they thought up as they squished and smooshed the ingredients together.

First it felt slimy, then it was smooth as butter.

Hence the name, playdough butter slime.

Playdough Butter Slime Instructions

Gather your supplies:

  • Playdough (we used 3oz containers)
  • Lotion (any type should work. We used Aveeno Baby fragrance-free lotion)
  • Workspace cover such as a table cloth
  • Small bin to work on if you choose

Instructions:

This was so incredibly simple, begin by letting each child pick out their playdough color of choice and have them work it into a flattened bowl.

Add two squirts of lotion then have the children knead the playdough and lotion together until fully combined.

Repeat this process until your playdough takes on a smooth silky feel. We ended with 8-10 squirts of lotion. Adjust this to your preference.

You don’t want your dough to feel wet, just silky smooth.

Now it’s time to play!!

Ways To Learn

Playdough has so many amazing learning benefits for children. From creative thinking to hand-eye coordination. Problem solving to creative thinking. You are not just giving your child something gooey to play with, you are helping develop the muscles in their hands.

Let’s check out a few learning opportunities more in depth.

Sensory Exploration

Consider adding another sensory element to your playdough butter slime such as scented lotion. Be sure to be mindful of any sensitivities prior.

Have your children squeeze and stretch their new playdough butter slime, then have them do the same to regular unchanged playdough.

  • Do they feel different?
  • Does one stretch farther than the other?
  • Can you flatten one easier than the other?

Social and Emotional Learning

Playdough can be a wonderful collaborative activity that encourages children to share materials and ideas.

Set a tray of playdough tools in the center of the table and encourage children to use and share these tools. When they would like an item another child has, teach them to ask for an item using the person’s name. “Susie, can you pass the rolling pin?” “Johnny when you’re done with the scoop, may I use it?”

Fine Motor Skill Development

As children knead, stretch, and shape the playdough butter slime, they strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers. Consider this an amazing prewriting activity as they work on strengthening their hands and fingers.

The End Results

While still very much a form of playdough, this project, experiment, whatever you’d like to call it, was a massive success.

Not only did the children love this silky smooth texture as they manipulated it on their trays, the parent’s also appreciated us sending home a ‘slime’ they didn’t mind at their own kitchen table.

I hope you consider trying out this fun simple activity, I know your kiddos will love it!
