Bulletin Board: Turn Your Child Into The Cat In The Hat

When I make bulletin boards for my in-home childcare, I love adding the kids in some way or another. This year they will be The Cat in the Hat.

I’m sure you are going to know what I am going to say about this one ‘I wouldn’t touch that with a 39.5 foot pole.’ Here’s a short article about the topic as well.

Let’s leave it at that, don’t do it.

What Do We Need

When coming up with my most recent bulletin board, I searched “Cat in the Hat images without a face” and found this image on Pinterest. That’s perfect, that’s all we need.

You will also need some basic knowledge of Canva. I have lots of images to share for a step by step so if your knowledge is lacking, hopefully that will help you out.

I will be showing you what to do on a laptop. The layout is a bit different from a mobile phone or tablet and honestly, I rarely use those for Canva as it is so much easier on my computer.

Step By Step Without Pictures

If you’re stopping here I assume it’s because you know a thing or two about Canva.

That’s great! This may be really basic for you.

If this isn’t super clear, head to the next section for pictures.

  1. Save a copy of this image to your computer. You can save it as a jpeg if that is the option it gives you.
  2. Sign into Canva.com or create a free account.
  3. Click Create a Design
  4. Click Custom Size
  5. Change px to in
  6. Put 8.5 in the box under width and 11 in the box under height
  7. Click create new design
  8. On the left sidebar click uploads
  9. Click upload file
  10. Upload the image from your computer
  11. Click on the image and it will show up on your paper
  12. If you have the paid version and want to remove the background click edit photo then BG remover
    1. (yes I know it’s white, if you are making multiple to a page and will overlap any areas the background can get in the way)
  13. Next click elements on your sidebar and type frames in the searchbar
  14. Click the circle frame. If you don’t see it in your top 3 choices, you can click the see all button and it will open up all the frame options. Scroll through until you find the circle
  15. Adjust the size so it fits in the face opening. Do this by clicking on the frame and moving the little circles in the corners around
  16. Next you need to upload a photo of the child’s face you will be using. Rather than just clicking the photo, drag it over to the frame and hover it over until it drops in the frame
  17. Use the circles to adjust the size of the photo. If you click off and still want to adjust the photo, double click the photo and the adjust options will return
  18. To save your creation so you can print, first click the share button on the upper right side, change file type to PDF print, then click download
  19. You should find your file on in the downloads section of your computer

Now What?

After I print out my images, I cut them out and laminate them then add them to my Dr. Seuss bulletin board.

The best part about having these displayed somewhere is the excitement of the kids in your care seeing these then finding themselves.

I like to laminate so when little fingers touch (if it’s low it’s bound to happen) the images are safe. My kiddos always look forward to when they get to take their picture home. I want them to last.

Use This Process Over and Over

I find this to be the easiest way to add pictures to images. It is fun and really doesn’t take much time once you get the hang of it.

I would love to know how you add your children to your bulletin boards.
