Whether you’re a mom to littles or a daycare provider it’s important to keep up on all the holidays. At least the big ones!
March is surprisingly packed with fun themes, it’s hard to get it all in.
We’ve got Dr. Suess’s birthday, Johnny Appleseed Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and the first day of spring. If that isn’t enough for you make sure to check out my post on 83 fun March holidays. That post will give you ideas for every day of the month!
With St. Patrick’s Day just days away you may be searching for some fun craft ideas for your littles. Recently at my daycare Leprechauns were our topic.
My kids loved making these little paper plate leprechauns, or santa as my 2 year old insisted. Anything with a beard. It was a great activity for the 1-4 year olds in my care and easy to do with very few materials.
Here’s what you’ll need:
– Green and orange crayons
– Glue Sticks
– Scissors
You can absolutely hand over your child’s crayon box and let them at it with all the colors of the rainbow, I chose to just give green and orange as an added learning moment with our craft.
Tutorial:
- Download the Leprechaun template by clicking HERE
- cut out the center of the paper plate. you can either dispose of this piece or glue it to the back of your leprechaun hat for some added stability
- Color the paper plate and beard orange.
- Color the hat, arms, and legs green
- Cut out all the pieces. Depending on the childs age this may be an adult step.
- Glue all the pieces on according to the picture or your childs abstract ideas
- Turn your crafter into a leprechaun!!
While Your Littles Are Making A Masterpiece
While your littles are hard at work, this is a great time to talk about:
- The colors you are using, orange and green. (if you choose)
- Discuss placement of all the parts, hats go on your head, arms go to your sides etc.
- Ask your kids fun questions…
- If you found a pot of gold what would you do with it?
- What are other things that are green?
- What makes you lucky?
- Talk about St. Patrick’s Day
- St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17
- It’s believed that Saint Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland.
- If you catch a leprechaun they have to tell you where their pot of gold is
- Ireland’s national flower is the shamrock. Typically a shamrock has 3 heart-shaped leaves, 4 if you’re lucky

More Activity Ideas
A favorite activity in my daycare on super cold or rainy days when there is a high energy level is to turn on freeze dances on Youtube. If you can stream this on your TV, search for Leprechaun Freeze Dance. You may need to read the instructions but it’s fun to watch the kids dance, freeze, and play the mini games.
